Over the weekend, Nick and I ended up doing a serious cleaning session for our room. Instead of just putting our clothes away and vacuuming, I ended up rearranging and relocating a lot of my possessions. This forced me to acknowledge some of the things I own that I rarely notice, specifically my yearbooks. I was adding things to the bookshelf when I decided to take a moment and whip out my senior year notebook. Immediately, a thick envelope fell out filled with the letters my closest friends had written to me during our Vision Quest experience. For someone as sentimental and nostalgic as me, finding this envelope was like finding a goldmine. I stopped everything I was doing and read every letter from start to finish. The memories and sentiments that came rushing back to me overwhelmed me. I love writing for this very reason - letters such as these in addition to diary entries that I've kept over the years help keep the memories alive. I remembered so many things from these letters just from the mere mention of them - things I hadn't remembered on my own.
Lauren's letter reminded me about reading Whitney, My Love and also being serious members of the highly coveted MOVIE CLUB (that comes with a hand signal).
Zoe's letter reminded me of our "study sessions" for anatomy and Spanish that were really outlets for gossiping and drinking Fanta and eating cheese puffs.
Vicky's letter reminded me of how we first became friends at the Freshman pool party and then, four years later, we passed notes in math class about Sir Hugh.
Nicky's letter reminded me of our senior year minicourse ("....BITCH...") and countless nights at the house on Wolfe Canyon.
Risa's letter reminded me of our quotes from Disney movies and jumping on the trampoline.
And all these memories are but tiny little fractions of each of our growing relationships over years. There are so many more things I can remember with each of you that have made me respect you and love you. We have partied together, cried together, eaten together, laughed together, traveled together. It's been a long five years since Marin Academy exited our lives, but I cherish the fact that we all still keep in touch. I know that we will all be at each other's weddings, will meet each other's kids, will travel to visit each other, and so much more. Since we all parted ways, you have each found your own calling and a new group of friends in college and I hope you can find ways to capture your memories with these friends too. Cheers to our still-budding friendships and the many more years to come!
I love you all.
