I first learned about Earth Day when I was a sophomore at MA and working as a Community Service Coordinator (yeah, remember those days?). I've never done anything big enough that I was proud of in terms of celebrating Earth Day - in fact, I think I may have always carried a chip on my shoulder when I just pretended I was cool enough to just know that it was Earth Day. Today, the story is the same. Yet something happened today that's very exciting and makes me want to do a better job of making small changes in my life not just on Earth Day, but every day! Two of my friends, Jordan and Jesse, bought an apple tree today, but didn't know where to plant it so it could continue to be watered and taken care of. They had me call my mom and ask if they could plant it in the front yard of 48 Pomeroy - the first house my mom bought in Burlington, the first house I lived in outside the dorms, and the house that our friends are moving into in June for the next year (which I couldn't be more excited about). They got the go-ahead from Sylvia and from the tenants who live there now and 15 minutes later, an apple tree had been successfully planted in the front yard! A small and laughable task, yet the only one I saw today that celebrated Earth Day and one that we are all excited about! I know Becky will take good care of it for the next 12 months and that whenever I come back to visit, there will be a good story behind the planting of that tree. There are many ways people can make a difference but planting a tree? So long-term and so exciting! Yay apples. Yay earth.
