national read-a-book day.

Did you know today is National Read-A-Book Day? Seems fitting considering that Labor Day Weekend has brought an end to summer and today is the first day of classes for New York City public schools. If you're anything like me, it is so much harder to find the time to read during the school year - textbooks take over and homework replaces your leisurely reading time. I'm making a personal goal, however, to carry a leisure book with me at all times as you never know when you may have ten minutes to spare - getting to class early, sitting in the waiting room at the Financial Aid office, or if you're a lucky city-dweller, riding the bus or subway from point A to point B. This announcement of a reading holiday is the perfect reminder to set my goals high for getting my reading time in. The list below (found on Hello Giggles) gives some fun reasons why we should all take a minute to dive into our books today.

I'd like to add to the list:

Fascinating characters can become your new best friends.
The more you read, the more Jeopardy! questions you'll be able to answer.
Picking up a book and putting down the Apple or the Blackberry helps save energy.
The sooner you finish a book, the sooner you can lend it to a friend.

I'd love to hear if you have anything to add to the list as well.

Happy National Read-A-Book Day. I will celebrate by starting a hefty new book I've had on my shelf for three years, The Legend of Edgar Sawtelle. I finished Mockingjay over the weekend - a review of which is on its way!

Love Read-A-Book Day! I read Quentins by Maeve Binchy for two hours this morning, bliss :) I read about 1/3 of the Story of Edgar Sawtelle last year and put it down because it got a little haunting for before bed reading, just a cautionary word. It has received incredible acclaim and Bodie teaches it with Hamlet in her English class!

I just started Beautiful Boy. XO I want to read an update about student teaching once you're deep into it :)
